the cold morning light

Bobby and I styled a photo shoot on the weekend, as part of a photography project I am taking part in (we will be styling and photographing his contribution on Sunday) and whilst I was sitting there editing my images I couldn’t help but allow a stream of thoughts flow through my mind ready for their own editing.
I discovered that maybe I need to write in order to create images that recreate an inkling of what is in my head.  One simply cannot exist without the other. The act of breathing life to the thoughts that echo within my head through the medium of the written word in turn sparks the connective labour of my second love, the visual medium.
How one cannot truly exist without the other has become intriguing to me. I wondered how long I could sit and think about this concept and dream up plausible reasons as to why.
During sleepless nights, I've found myself sitting here for hours, searching by a dim light perched in the corner of the room, for the words uttered by great scholars and authors which resonate and bring life to the voice within me. I’ll sit there, running my finger over the words of a cherished quote as though the simple act of touching the paper will infuse my skin and soul to the same identity.
And then I realise:
My writing is my identity.
My photography is a manifestation of those words.
The former cannot exist without the latter.
The atoms within the core of my being bellow this. It's what holds my essence together.
Knowing this and coming to this realisation, I trust in this fuel to keep moving forwards, trying to always be better at what I do, creating visuals from the words that are born within me.

Our Tomorrow

The weather got cold in Sydney this weekend.
We had our swimwear ready to hit the beach, but the slight nip in the breeze swiftly changed our minds, and we spent the rest of the day catching up on what we had left behind.
On this very weekend though, Bobby and I learnt something.  It wasn’t anything different, or new, but it was a gentle reminder of something we had forgotten.  To move forwards, you only have to be better than yesterday.
There.  You all now have the key to unlocking your inner selves too.
You just have to be better than yesterday.
We all have the potential to give a spark to the magic within us.
Reflect, mediate with your thoughts, and think about all the ways that tomorrow will be better because you will have taken a step closer to the next great thing to bless your lives.

This brought something to my attention, other the deeper side of this reflection and progressive journey.  We can apply this principal in anything we approach in our lives.  It really is that simple.  We can always be better than our yesterdays, if we try.  Staying true to that concept, in the passion of imagery, what would you think is a way to approach this through a visual medium…or what photography project would you like us to embark upon?
Look forward to reading some of your thoughts! x

She + Me

She said goodbye to the strands that grew in length to her mid back, starting anew with all things that were past.  He waited with anticipation as she walked through the door and flashed her timeless, childlike smile. He had stood beside a myriad shadows in his life, only now to be embraced by light.

It rained today

It rained today.  We felt the Sun, standing behind the clouds with a fuzzy smile.  But the clouds rolled heavy and the dripped rain dropped.  Behind the mask of this grey sky, the world is orderly and light, but through the cotton wool cloak this world can become a fractal alter ego of itself.  Through that distorted passage of time, that perfect egg dropped, leaving just a lifeless shell resting against a pool of muddied water.  And all the while, the Sun still stands behind it's walls, with smiles in his hands and laughter at his feet.

I don't mind when it rains.  The walls are stained green with thirst stricken moss, and eggs crack the safety of their existence for a sip of air, but I know the rays of the Sun are laced within the creases of my palm.

The McPharlins

You discover so much about yourself through your actions with those that you love.  You question why you love with such a burning intensity, and reflect upon how that changes the way you perceive life.  As long as I can remember, some of the closest people in my life are those that I had a blessing to travel along this journey of life with.  It wasn’t out of convenience that I was around these people, but out of luck.  I was lucky to have a childhood where the weekends were filled with hours of laughter.  We laughed till the early hours of the morning as a group, and sometimes we laughed in the early hours of the morning whilst whispering stories to one another at night.

When my cousin Kalinz came to Sydney from Perth recently, I felt lucky that Bobby and I would be able to spend some time together with her and Luke.  I watched as Luke and Bobby witnessed a snippet of our childhoods replaying in front of them, as my parents and I laughed till it hurt with Kalinz.  Being able to share this and include their two young children, Willow and Bronte, made it all the more special, to know that we were forming droplets of memories within their minds.  One day, they too will look back upon these moments as lights within the corner of their minds.

Kalinz sent me a very sweet text message a couple of days ago, that literally brought me a harsh realisation that the way I see the world is truly worth sharing.  We go through our moments of doubt and lack of belief, but then there are these pockets in time that truly make you stop and revel in images that tell stories where words are absent but, all the more potent.
